Alvan Petrus Park Remodel

Alvan Petrus Park, a community park in Port Washington, New York, is currently undergoing renovation. The Town of North Hempstead acquired the abandoned park space from the housing authority and have declared it a public park. The 1.5 acre space had been fenced off since 2008 and was under consideration for development as a senior housing complex. Under public opposition, the planned was aborted, and the Town selected Cashin Associates for the park’s makeover. Rather than revert the site to a typical community park with just a basketball court, CA engineered the site to incorporate its hilly topography making the site unique. The result – a community park accessible to all with amenities such as a trail network, handball court, basketball court, nature-inspired play area, multi-recreational field, picnic area, and rolling play hill built right in! The site plan preserves and highlights the existing natural amenities and site lines. The design was developed around existing oak trees in the park, giving the site an established feel upon ribbon cutting. Furthermore, the site integrates green infrastructure in the design through use of pervious asphalt for the trail system and two vegetated bioretention basins to collect and filter stormwater runoff, thereby providing functional, educational, and aesthetic services. The park is anticipated to open in Spring 2017.
